Hello. Since I wrote this in translation, there may be problems. I am a high school senior living in Turkey. I have been doing research on slime molds for a long time. I want to participate in a scientific competition with them, but I need to do an experiment first. Please tell me how I can find them. How can I find it in the forest?

Hi all, I found this Slime Mould growing on Eurhynchiam striatum (Common Moss) I think! but very unusual as cannot identify, stalkless and growing directly on the tips of the moss leaves. They appear to be like small misshaped discs all <1.0mm, dark blue with globose spores at 10.60 - 11.94 µm with 2.35 capillitium ending with Y-shaped ends hyaline. Spores pale purple grey with just visible spines at around 0.3µm. On large dead trunk of Fagus. Please can you help? First time here, so…

I recently got some Physarum from Ian (thanks!!), and it has been doing amazingly well for me. I'm highly enjoying keeping and observing the slime mold so far, but my actual goal was to try using it as springtail food for a species of picky eaters - Vitronura giselae. Other species in the Neanuridae family are known to feed on slime mold, and my initial experiments with these springtails showed some promise -- I just didn't have much luck trying to culture a random wild slime I found, or…

But the Physarum seems very easy to keep, and has already grown a lot, so I went ahead and introduced a small bit of plasmodium into one of my V. giselae cultures. And as hoped, they are showing some interest in it.

These springtails have a conical mouth that is specialized for sucking up food, and in this one you can see the mouth stuck into the plasmodium.

We are currently trying to grow a sample we have in a fish tank.

Has anyone done this or similiar?

Any advice on best conditions would be much appreciated

Approx 5 x 4cm with a thin membrane and filled with what looks like a translucent milky fluid, dry and squidgy to the touch; just like a giant zit.

False puffball (Enteridium lycoperdon) which a bit of googling says is a slime mould has been suggested.
Hello everyone, I've been growing a plasmodium of P. polycephalum for about one and a half months now. I've got it to a decent size and have been enjoying it a lot so far. They just turn into a puddle and start to smell after a day or so. I previously tried drying them quickly, I tried drying them in complete darkness in about 24h on a drying rack. And I tried drying a piece of plasmodium in a petri dish over the course of one week. Yet, I haven't been able to revive any of them. Does anyone have some suggetions on what I could try to do? Looking forward to hearing from you!
Receiving culturetag:slimoco.ning.com,2023-05-06:3917201:Topic:1676272023-05-06T00:43:48.081ZKatiehttp://slimoco.ning.com/profile/Katie
Has anyone received a culture recently (March or April in 2023)? I haven’t seen anything on it since a couple of years ago. Is he still giving them out? How do we know if our request was received? If he’s not still sharing is anyone in the US willing to share with me? I want to use them for my dissertation study and was told I need to start my research in August so I need to get them started growing soon (I wasn’t planning to start until next year). Thank you!

Hello! Does anyone have a particularly funny image of slime mold escaping a petri dish? If you do, and are willing to share it, I would be most grateful! Your image would possibly be included in an article I'm writing for the Biomimicry Institute on remarkable slime mold and bio-inspired innovations from better urban planning to decarbonizing aerospace.

This is such a wonderful community! I'm honored to be here.

Kindly,

Hello dear ones!

For an artistic project I am working with Herta, my Slime Mould and wonder if any of you have ever thought about the vibration frequency of the Slime Moulds.

For a sound installation for my final exhibition of the study I would like to work with Slime Mould typical frequencies. I think they pulse 100 seconds in one direction, then vibrate 100 seconds in the other. Also, I have found that Slime Moulds move in superimposed waves. One fundamental wave and another whose frequency is twice as high. Do you have any other exciting experiences or know a bit more that could be converted into sound? I would be especially interested in the fundamental frequency (Hz) of a vibrating slime mold. But also everything else, glad to hear!

Also nice is maybe working with the different vibration patterns: When a Slime Mould spots something it likes, or crawls away from a snail or mold, it pulses faster.

I got some physarum cultures on the interweb. I have them in little plastic tupperwares on damp paper towels with some boiled oats a centimeter away. I keep them in the dark world under my couch. So far none of the ones I've tried to awaken have done so, they just sit there inanimately and eventually get smelly. What am I doing wrong?
