applications of slime mold

After extensive research, I noticed that there are a few gaps in the field of slime mold research.  Are there any major areas that need to be investigated? Any replies would help, thanks.

Big bang, big disappointment :)

Four weeks of crazy work,  turning the spare room into a culture lab and time lapse studio I made enough culture for two thousand people and I should be there with my friends and colleagues on the stand inspiring the next generation of scientists,  slime fans and eccentrics.

Unfortunately I'm stuck on a hospital ward with fifty stitches in my neck waiting until I'm allowed home. So it goes I suppose but damn I was looking forward to the Big Bang Fair,  I couldn't even bring a slime…

Research finished! (kind of)

As some might have noticed, I've been working on a schoolpaper (we call it a profielwerkstuk) and we've finally finished it, so here down below you can download our final paper. Have to warn though, we did not exactly manage to do everything we wanted to, but I think it still might be interesting and inspiring to read it. In it is also described a very good method for culturing the mould. Hope you'll enjoy!…

What I'm up to

Working on hacking compact cameras (all as cheap as possible off e-bay) to take time lapse and also to use as camera traps using an Arduino and sensors to acheive this and so far have had a lot of success. Moving house so unable to do much for a few weeks but when I start back up will post pictures and instructions so that anyone can follow. All that is reqired is some soldering and an arduino the progamming is very simple, but soldering is difficult if you have no…

Ruminations of a recent devotee . . .

I am fascinated to find a collective of single cell organisims that has so organized itself to accomplish mutually advantageous outcomes . . . would that our leaders in congress could operate so harmoniously . . . I wonder if Physarum Polycephalum would accept a write-in vote?

Culturing Slime

Tomorrow I will be starting to culture my slime and I'm a bit new to the whole process. We aim to culture slime both on minimal media and oatmeal agar so how should I go about culturing? E.g. How much of the sclerotia should I be adding to each plate initially?

Thanks

Fan and Tubular Growth Promotion

Hi everyone,

I am looking to promote tubular and fan like growth in Physarum Polycephalum in 2 separate dishes (1 with tubes, the other with fans). I think to promote tubular growth, I will have a medium with low nutrient content in a petri dish scattered with porridge oats or something like that (any recommendations for this medium?). However what kind of medium could be evenly distributed across a dish that would promote the alternative fan like growth of the slime mould? Could it just…

Where to find a slime mould

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to carry out a research project at school involving Physarum Polycephalum and have decided to go out and find my own. Having looked at several sources, the web says that they are retrievable from damp conditions in woodland areas e.g. damp wood, rotting vegetation. Can anyone tell me any other places where they could be hiding?
Thanks

Plotting and planning....

Getting involved with several schools in my area running STEM club activities - I'm trying to design a six week course on our dear sticky friend that'll be adaptable to ages 12-17. Looks like it'll be fun ( and a lot of work ). My own cultures have been dormant for a while aside from raising the odd batch but I should start playing again soon.
