Physarum Polycephalum (a slime mold) macro timelapse. Here, a plasmodium was kept in low temperatures (4-15C) for many days. Under this condition, the slime mold did not migrate, and only when the temperature was increased, it decided to migrate again. At this point I decided to make a timelapse to inspect the strange structures that had formed. Physarum is typically yellow, but will turn orange when forming sclerotia (cysts). What I think happened here is that the slime mold was in the process of forming sclerotia, but then turned back.
The weird structures dissapeared within an hour, returning to normal morphology.
Time lapse recorded on Canon 40D with canon macro lens. Images span around 2.5 hours.
