I have not seen these "white hairs" documented before and I have no idea what the scientific name for them would be.  Every possible procedure was used to prevent any bacterial contamination and only distilled water was used to activate the culture.  Although difficult to see, once the hairs reached the green oat flake on the left, they began growing from that location also.
