My 3D printer as microscope

In these images I show how I build my microscope for my Physarum polycephalum images and video's.

I started with printing the microscope appliances that can hold the petri dishes. I also printed a contraption to hold the USB camera strapped to the printer head of the 3D printer.

On the laptop is an installation application (CURA)…

CHNOPS BlobArt: Using an oscilloscope for value confirmation

I use an oscilloscope (aka "scope") to investigate on the actual electric values that are generated by the studio.

Because the electric potential 3.3V that is put out by the ESP32 and the fact that the 100 KOhm resistors can differ slightly from the given values on their color codes I decided to connect a scope to the studio connectors.

This scope is able to measure two channels at once, so this is perfect to investigate on the real behaviour of the electric flow and…

CHNOPS BlobArt: BlobJob screen shots

What BLOBJob produces; some screen shots:

Logging while measuring CHNOPS values: This logs the OPACITY type matrix.

CHNOPS BlobArt: BlobJob explained Part 1

BLOB-Art is created by CHNOPS where the BLOBJob application converts the produced data from measurement numbers into matrices.

During the development of the BLOBJob application I encountered a number of difficulties on which I will not spend to much words. So here is a global description of how a matrix is build and then into a JPEG image.

To start with: BLOBJob can create three types of images:

  • Coloured with opacity
  • Colour only
  • Opacity only…

CHNOPS BlobArt: Data to BlobArt

The BlobJob controller produces data that is captured thru the three connectors on the CHNOPS studio.

In order to convert this data into a presentable form it has to be interpreted and has to create the matrix that will be the "BLOB-Art". So the matrix is the heart of the experiment examination.

The matrix is build up from a 30x30 dots…

CHNOPS BlobArt: The BLOBJob controller to convert BlobArt to data

In these part I want to tell something about the conversion from the CHNOPS electric connection to usable data. I call the the "BLOBJob controller".

I use an ESP32 microprocessor to put a 3.3Volt potential on the three connectors that are attached to the BLOB studio.

The studio is covered with an aluminium sheet in order to prevent to much light enter because Physarum polycephalum prefer to grow in relative…

CHNOPS BlobArt: the studio where it happens

To be able for CHNOPS to create its Blob-Art it needs a studio to work in.

The studio is build from a buttercup in which three rectangular holes are been cut out and three strips of aluminium foil is slipped in and with a piece of tape constrained, thereby closing the buttercup in order to prevent CHNOPS from escaping.

Since CHNOPS needs to put out two parameter values (color and opacity) the studio is designed as shown in the image:…

My CHNOPS creates BLOB-Art

So I wanted to do more than just setting my blob up to create a map of my city.

Inspired by a video about Physarum polycephalum in which electric potential is used to create music I wanted to investigate the possibilities of the use of electric potential on Physarum.

So I started with some desk research…
