"What are you shooting your timelapses on? I found phones sometimes struggle with battery even when plugged in. I buy cheap mirror less cameras off ebay for filming "

Hey, I'm a high school senior, and last summer I designed a bunch of assays with slime mould for the Bio101 class at my school.I thought the protocols might be useful to some of the people here, so I wanted to publish them.We worked with Physarum polycephalum, and I don't care if you share the protocols as long as you credit me (Zander Chierici) and do not use them for 'bad' purposes or something.…See More

"I'm using the standard kit lenses - 18-55mm, about 40cm above the tray you can get a 30x30cm field of view, I run assays either on a whole plate of agar or on 5x5cm agar squares with a paper top ( eliminates problems with shrinkage ). I used to…"

"I'm not too familiar with canon cameras, do you have to have a lense to get good photos of the slime? If so, what size lense do you use?"

"Hi I use Canon eos-m's - fairly cheap second hand and they run magic lantern so you can time lapse with long exposure. If you're thinking of Ir just to keep slimes happy, Amber leds are a lot easier - physarum can't see light…"

Any tips on finding an affordable camera making slime time lapses?

I work at a highschool lab (as a passionate student) and am designing slime mould experiments for next year's biology class. I have been trying to find a good camera for capturing slimes in low or or infrared light, but since it's a high school class the budget is about $2000 for 5 cameras. But would prefer to stay on the cheap side if possible.Does anybody have any camera recommendations or infrared set ups? I was thinking of taking out the infrared filter in my gopro and adding an infrared…See More

What is your interest in slime moulds? (we need to know you're not a bot or spamster)
I am helping create/design a slime mold (mould?) project for Bio 1 students in high school.
Here are the list of goals for improving the project:

1. A more efficient and fool-proof system for growing/maintaining slime mold
a. How to start from sclerotium
b. How to maintain a growing culture and minimize contamination
c. How to get uniform “starts” from a growing culture
2. An iterated and well-tested set of assays and materials/tools for experimentation
a. Best versions of choice assays, bridge assays, maze assays, U-shaped trap, etc
b. Ideal concentrations, solutions, and means of employing both attractants and repellents.
3. A group of easy-to-implement measurement protocols and tools
a. Time lapse rig set-ups and analysis
b. Best practices for measurements w/o time lapse
c. Measuring growth in different ways:
d. Surface area, path lengths, rate, etc.
e. Still image analysis:
f. Image J/Fiji or explore other programs

I am really excited to learn more about slime molds through this project and I hope to use the Slime Mould Collective as a valuable resource for questions and problems I encounter.
