I wondered if the bright orange physarum have different pigments from their paler siblings, so I mashed a load into alcohol ( 80% isopropanol ), filtered out the solids, and ran the residue on paper chromatography using isoprop as the solvent. Got the photos by waving a small uv LED torch over the strips during a long exposure so it's not great.
My pale and feeble slime seems to be lacking a pigment that runs with the solvent front. I repeated one of these in 2d - do it on the edge of a big square, dry it after one solvent, flip it 90degrees and use a different solvent - it helps figure out if your spots are more than one pigment, in this case it doesn't look like it - there's still four pigments visible.

I#'m guessing the one on the left with the split tail was repeated in 2d?
How does it compare to carrots?
The split tail's just smiling from the out of practice application of stuff to the paper but it was that sample because it had the brightest spots. I'm wondering about tlc - I have a load of ultra fine pumice and good quality plaster ( and a really good respirator - PPE people! ) , making plates isn't hard and it gives me the option of collecting and extracting a little more easiliy.
If this lockdown goes on much longer I swear I'll end up building an FPLC rig at this rate.
I hadn't thought of carrots - def worth a try!
